Baptism According To Scripture

Shiloh Baptist Church believes that Baptism is a symbol of deep spiritual experiences. Shiloh and the CBWC believe that it is by immersion only that this burial and resurrection are portrayed. Matthew 28:19 says, “Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”1

What is the definition of Baptism

What Baptism Mean To A Believer

Romans 6:3-6 “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have beenplanted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. ”

1Corinthians 12:13 “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into onB body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond orfree; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. ”

Galatians 3:27 “For as many ofyou as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”

1 Peter 3:21 “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:”

How Many Baptisms?

4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to oe hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one ba ptism; 6 one God and Father of all,who is over all and through all and in all.

  1. There is only one baptism and we at Shiloh Baptist Church practice the believer’s baptism, which is an individual’s confession of their faith when they have reached a place of understanding of the saving work of Christ and decide on bapti This level of understanding is not limited to a particular age; it is dependent on the individual’s understanding and response to their faith. Therefore, we do not practice child (infant) baptism because a baby who is just born and being baptized have no conscience of their sinful nature and their need for God’s grace to be saved. A person when they have fully understood the saving work of Christ, that it is by grace through faith they have been saved (Ephesians 2:8-9) and have come to repentance, they are fully aware of their need for Jesus and have an understanding why they need to be baptized, they can be baptized. A baby, who is not grown or even matured to a level of understanding, is unable to appreciate the need for baptism.

  2. Baptism does not qualify you for a particular church neither is it an act of being a member of a . church but it is a church ordinance that a church universally recognizes a believer’s identity with the burial and resurrection of our ord Jesus Christ. Therefore, there is need for one baptism not many, because it is not a qualification for something but an identification to one’s Savior.

Why Are We Baptized?
  1. Baptism signifies a repentant heart that has come to Christ to be washed and forgiven of sins. (Acts 2:38, 22:16; Matthew 3:6-8)

  2. Baptism witnesses that we belong to, and are clothed with Christ; and that by faith we are children of (Galatians 3:26-28)

  3. Baptism is an identification with Christ signifying our death (the death -of our old nature), and burial (of our old nature), and resurrection (of our new nature in Christ Jesus). (Romans 6:1-7)
